THE PRESIDENT'S XI - THE GRAND REUNION SINGLE WICKET COMPETITION

THE PRESIDENT'S XI
CRICKET CLUB

THE REUNION MATCH 2008

THE GRAND REUNION
27 SEPTEMBER 2008

Doubt and uncertainty up to the last minute as to whether anyone was actually going to turn up for this tenative reunion event.

DOUBT AND UNCERTAINTY

And even if they did come, would they still be able to play? But on a glorious late summer afternoon - one by one - late and later - they trickled in. A start was made about forty-five minutes late - but a format of everyone to receive twenty balls (or less at the discretion of the umpire) was readily agreed - and battle commenced. Ravi Muthiah first man in - and he sets a score high enough to provide some stiff competition. The bowling was by and large friendly - the fielding execrable - and the batsmen began to feast. Almost four hundred runs scored in the afternoon off only fifty overs.

And how good to see all these old Presidents again - Duncan Fraser back in action after twenty years. Steve Gaymer back after almost as long. Gordon Sheridan retired more recently - but has to go very easy on his knees these days. Prof. Keith Willison batting as he did all those years since. Jerry Williams, our first captain, from a quarter of a century ago. But not entirely a procession of old men remembering their youth - Atsuko Martin was finally allowed to join in - and managed to give a lesson in ground fielding to her elders. And Simon Morecroft appeared to be batting better than ever. From the younger generation we had Tom Worms and Andrew Swan (who made their debuts for the Presidents as boys in 1992 and 1997).

And great to see Clive Lewis back in harness - and well done to him and Tony Bruggemann for keeping wicket between them all afternoon. And we closed with current skipper Praba Thagarajah making his first appearance of the season - and Guy Martin, the only founder member still regularly turning out for the club.

A splendid afternoon - not too onerous - although at least one player didn't make it to the party afterwards. A brief sojourn in the Sultan - and then back to the Worms house for food and drink - there to be joined by various wives and partners - and also Robert Frew, Rob Raeburn, Carey Ollerenshaw and Will Thorogood who hadn't been able to mnake the match itself. Good fun - and the evening closed with calls to do it all again next year.

All the details and pictures are given below. Well done to roving cameraman Steve Gaymer - and to Keith and Jenny Willison for further photographs . Well done to Simon Morecroft for providing a camera and sending the pictures through so quickly. Well done Anne Worms for marshalling all the social side. And well done Tom Worms for winning the prize.

ONCE A PRESIDENT - ALWAYS A PRESIDENT

RAVI TAKES GUARD
RAVI MUTHIAH

RAVI MUTHIAH

A sluggish start from Ravi, with only four runs from the bat off his first ten, but a rain of boundaries - six fours off the last seven balls faced - left him with a challenging score of twenty-seven - good enough to lead for much of the afternoon.

Final Score : 27 (six fours, two wickets lost).

CHRISTIAN DINGWALL

CHRISTIAN DINGWALL

The bowlers beginning to find their line and Christian is restricted to a single boundary - three times out - a minus score.

Final Score : -1 (one four, three wickets lost).

DUNCAN FRASER FANCIES A BOWL
DUNCAN FRASER

DUNCAN FRASER

Too long away from the game for Duncan to find his touch - pinned down by the bowling - and the yellow shorts were perhaps a mistake.

Final Score : 1 (one wicket lost).

STEVE BACKS UP - JERRY GIVES IT AIR
STEVE GAYMER

STEVE GAYMER

First ball put away for four - the runs dried up thereafter - but not dismissed - another boundary later on - and plenty of singles towards the end.

Final Score : 18 (two fours, no wickets lost).

MIKE EDWARDS

MIKE EDWARDS

Off the mark first ball with a four - but progress checked by two disastrous run-outs - both batsmen floundering. Successive fours later on - but too much to do.

Final Score : 14 (five fours, three wickets lost).

GORDON SHERIDAN TAKES STRIKE
GORDON SHERIDAN

GORDON SHERIDAN

Run out off the first ball - but thereafter looking good. Hitting as hard as ever, but finding the fielders - seven singles from his last seven balls not quite enough.

Final Score : 20 (three fours, one wicket lost).

KEITH WILLISON ON THE RUN
KEITH WILLISON

KEITH WILLISON

Looking good until his innings was interrupted by the tea-break - a bit more sluggish thereafter. Three fours from his first ten balls - but no more to follow.

Final Score : 22 (three fours, no wickets lost).

TEATIME
ANNE WORMS

ANNE WORMS

Anne, Queen of the Teas, with a fine spread of sandwiches. A more impressive performance than some others of the afternoon. She looks on as her son lays waste to the bowling.

JERRY WILLIAMS STUMPED
JERRY WILLIAMS

JERRY WILLIAMS

Three singles and a four off his first four balls - a workmanlike start - but an horrendous stumping fifth ball and the pace faltered.

Final Score : 14 (two fours, one wicket lost).

A GLANGE TO LEG FOR FOUR FROM KEN WHITE
KEN WHITE

KEN WHITE

Declined a runner, despite a recent ankle operation - some good shots - three boundaries - but too much to do.

Final Score : 14 (three fours, one wicket lost).

TONY BRUGGEMANN CLIPS TO LEG
TONY BRUGGEMANN

TONY BRUGGEMANN

Off the mark with a four off his first ball - but struggled to beat the field later on.

Final Score : 18 (two fours, no wickets lost).

ATSUKO MARTIN PLAYS FORWARD
ATSUKO MARTIN

ATSUKO MARTIN

Some last-minute coaching - an impressive fielding performance all afternoon - and Atsuko is ready for her debut with the bat. Accomplished in defence. A catch off her final ball is disallowed by the umpire for the use of both hands - so just one dismissal.

Final Score : 1 (no fours, one wicket lost).

POWERFUL HITTING FROM SIMON MORECROFT
SIMON MORECROFT

SIMON MORECROFT

Morecroft rolls back the years - an aggressive and thumping assault on the bowling - he takes the lead for the afternoon with some controlled hitting.

Final Score : 30 (five fours, no wickets lost).

TOM WORMS

TOM WORMS

Loses his wicket with a smear across the line second ball - but thereafter it's mayhem. Morecroft's convertible parked right at the front of the car-park has been looking like a target all afternoon - and Tom duly lands a six in it. Seven boundaries off sixteen balls - the lead passes once more.

Final Score : 33 (two sixes, five fours, one wicket lost).

THE CLIVE LEWIS GLIDE TO THIRD MAN
CLIVE LEWIS

CLIVE LEWIS

How good to see Clive back in action - already with sterling work behind the stumps - and now with that familar repertoire of legside strokeplay.

Final Score : 17 (two fours, one wicket lost).

THE FIELD SPREADS FOR ANDREW SWAN
ANDREW SWAN

ANDREW SWAN

Three boundaries from his first six balls and the battle is on - a four and a six take Andrew to 28 with two balls to face - but two singles are not enough.

Final Score : 30 (one six, four fours, no wickets lost).

A PUNCH FOR FOUR FROM PRABA THANGARAJAH - HIS FAMILY ON THE BOUNDARY
PRABA THANGARAJAH

PRABA THANGARAJAH

Just three from his first six deliveries, but Praba is playing himself in after a season's absence. Three successive fours follow - and the challenge is on. The loss of a wicket on unlucky ball thirteen - but three further fours and Praba just fails to reach thirty.

Final Score : 29 (six fours, one wicket lost).

GUY MARTIN PREPARES TO STRIKE
GUY MARTIN

GUY MARTIN

Last man as it starts to get dark - but Guy finds the boundary off balls three, eight and ten - he's reached twenty after fourteen balls - but the innings then subsides.

Final Score : 24 (four fours, one wicket lost).

LAURENCE WORMS

LAURENCE WORMS

Umpire, scorer, arbiter and ringmaster for the afternoon. A succession of wholly arbitrary decisions about numbers of balls faced tended to even things up a little. Only gave one leg before decision all afternoon - but it was plumb.

JERRY PLAYS THE BLINDFOLD PIROUETTE SHOT
